Quality in Translation  

Providing translations of quality is very important to me. My Honors Thesis at Brigham Young University was entitled Applying and Evaluating the ASTM Standard Guide to Quality Assurance in Translation. Because of my thesis, I had the chance of working with said Guide before its publication, collaborating with the F15-48 Editing Committee with Dr. Alan Melby, my mentor, who is also the secretary of ATA.  

As a part of the proyect, I studied other Standard Guides to Quality in Translation, such as the German Standard DIN 2345. I am proud to be able to say my work complies with this standard. 

These guides insist on defining a set of specifications before the translation work begins. The principle would be "the client is always right", as the old maxim goes. Requester (you) and Provider (me) should agree on the parameters on which the translation should be done, such as if currencies should be converted, names translated, temperatures remain in Fahrenheit or converted to Celsius, and so forth. I have a default set of specifications which you should consult and confirm that you agree with, or if not, indicate which changes should be done in order to adjust them to your particular needs. I will be most happy to discuss this with you, and answer any questions you may have, to ensure your full satisfaction with my work. 

In my presentation at the ATA conference in Seattle, November 2005, I talked about the parameters to consider in order to create the specifications. This is the handout I gave at the conference.
